App for renting tools

Background

Two years ago, after relocating to a new home, I encountered unexpected costs and frequent repairs. Lacking a full toolbox, I had to borrow tools from my parents, who lived two hours away.

This experience highlighted the need for a more accessible and cost-effective tool rental solution, which inspired this project.

The Challenge

For people without tools at home,

home projects can be challenging due to high costs, storage needs, and environmental impact.

user research

To gain insights into the product and user needs, I conducted 6 interviews with individuals aged 21-60.

Some of the key questions I asked:

“How do you currently perform home renovation tasks? Do you do them frequently?”

This question helped me understand whether users perform renovations themselves and how they approach these tasks.

"Do you have all the necessary tools at home?"

This question helped me determine whether it is reasonable to assume that not everyone has all types of tools at home.

"What do you do when you don't have the right tools?"

The question revealed how users handle tool shortages. Some borrow, purchase tools, or hire professionals to address their needs.

Personas

Based on the research and interviews I conducted, I identified two main personas:

Guy, 25, Student

A young student who recently moved into his own apartment, full of motivation to renovate and fix up his new home.

Goal: Transforming the apartment into a comfortable and functional living space while saving money.

Liat, 50, Office Manager

A busy office manager who enjoys taking on home renovation projects during weekends but doesn't always have the necessary tools on hand.

Goal: To efficiently complete her home improvement projects without the need to purchase expensive tools.

The Solution

A product that offers a comprehensive solution that streamlines the entire tool rental process, providing a reliable, convenient, and efficient way to rent tools anytime and from anywhere.

Space-saving

Reclaim valuable living space in your home. Eliminate the need for tool storage by renting only when you need them.

Cost-effective

Borrow the tools you need at budget-friendly rates, without the hassle of buying and storing items you rarely use.

Environmental Impact

Minimize Environmental impact by reducing tool overproduction and waste. sustainable approach to tool usage by renting instead of buying.

Effective Search and Filtering

Effective Search and Filtering Mechanism:

After conducting user research, I realized that not all users are familiar with the names of tools.

Therefore, I understood the need to categorize tools in a way that makes navigation easy and intuitive.

To achieve this, I had a "card sorting" exercise with four participants from the focus group. They were given cards with the names of various tools and asked to sort them into categories.

From this exercise, I discovered that some tools could belong to the same category, and similar tools can often serve the same function.

As a result, I organized the app’s home screen into six main categories, each with subcategories. This makes it easy for users to find what they need, even if they don’t know the tools well.

Primary task flow

Tool Search and Ordering

Secondary task flow

Track the stages of the rental

the design

The design was crafted with careful thought about the product's values.

I chose gray and orange as the main colors - gray for its clean, pleasant feel and orange to evoke the world of tools.

Rounded fonts were selected for a friendly and readable interface, while the layout was designed to be intuitive, with clear categories and simple icons.

This combination ensures a smooth user experience, even for those unfamiliar with specific tools.
